Languages Department

Learn French and Spanish in lively and interesting way at Summit Saturday School.

Learn French

Learn French as though you were in France. Summit provides quality French courses taught by an experienced qualified native French teacher. Students have the opportunity to work in a relaxed environment with an excellent teacher. The classes are small and the teacher pupil relationship is very close so that individual needs can be easily addressed.

Whether you are a beginner or studying for GCSE or A level, you will receive quality tuition and your needs will be catered for.

The French curriculum integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, phonetics, vocabulary.

Beginners French

The Beginners class can accommodate a range of ages, so whether your child starts learning French in primary or in secondary school, we can help. The Scheme of Work for the Beginners is based around key vocabulary areas.

Intermediate French

In the Intermediate Group, we tackle grammar issues. The Scheme of Work is based around verbs and the formation and use of past, present and future tenses.

GCSE French

The GCSE Group has a very clear purpose: to help pupils achieve the best possible grade in the examination. This is done by making sure that the pupils have complete control of verbs and the three tenses mentioned above, that they have a wide range of vocabulary in the required topic areas, and that they are able to express their own opinions and justify them. In the spring term there will be practice in the four skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing using past examination papers. Our students consistently achieve A*-C grades. Homework is compulsory and is given each week.

AS and A2 French

Students studying AS and A2 French receive tuition and support in small groups or on a one to one basis.

Learn Spanish

Summit Saturday School has a Spanish GCSE or AS/A2 examination course to suit your needs. You will have the opportunity to learn or improve your Spanish in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The course is taught by a native qualified teacher. The teaching strategies used have enabled our KS4 students to raise their C/D predicted grades to As and Bs, thus moving them from the foundation into the higher tier examination level. We therefore, expect our students to achieve the all-important A-C grades in their examinations. Students are taught grammar and writing skills and are helped to communicate confidently and fluently.
Mature students wishing to learn Spanish for business or pleasure are also welcome.

Kofi's testimonial

"I was in year four, eight years ago, when I was first asked if I wanted to attend Summit. At that time I still wanted to be a footballer. I thought "why send me to another day of school, there's no need for it. I still attended what me and my mum agreed would be a trial week. I can still remember my first week and after my first lesson, when I walked out of my classroom thinking "it wasn't so bad, but still it was Saturday School. Then, I saw it, biscuits, laid out on the table, so I approached them, then I heard the words I would never forget "they're free".

I admit, free biscuits are the reason I was there initially, but in time I came to realise the traditions of Summit. Summit's tradition of not having regular 'run of the mill' teachers, but teachers who really care about each student in depth, teachers that put everything into students learning.

At Summit you don't just learn the curriculum, they teach self-confidence. Before I came to Summit I would have people tell me I had the ability, but I wasn't confident of it. In my time at Summit I came to realise my potential and in time the teachers there helped me to focus, helped me to achieve my best. So Summit has not only helped my education but also allowed me to grow in confidence.

So I would like to thank all the teachers of Summit, those who have left, those who can't be here, thank you for helping me, and to all the teachers who haven't taught me, consider yourselves lucky. the school became to me just a normal part of my weekly life and after years of Annual Presentations I find myself giving a leavers speech.

Time doesn't stand still for anyone and time has sped through my years here and I can't believe that I'm here saying good-bye. I want to say a special thanks to mum for all she has done for me and a very special thanks to Mrs Stewart for all of her effort and out of the way things she has done for me in my time here. I'd like to thank them for not giving up on me when sometimes they should have. Mrs Stewart has done a lot for me here, making Summit feel like a second home, thank you for all you've done for everyone.

Finally to the whole of Summit, to the students leaving, I wish everyone the best of luck in their futures. To the other students I'd like to say continue to make Summit proud and to carry on reaching for the sky. To all of the juniors here, I would like to say two things, please save biscuits for the older ones and believe in yourselves because I know everyone else does. The dictionary describes finish as the final stage of something; the end. Then this is the end for me at Summit, I've finished but I only hope this to be a temporary good-bye, because no one wants to end such a fantastic time." Kofi
