Science For A-Level GCSE And SATs

SATs, GCSE and A level students studying for qualifications in Science receive highly specialized teaching by our Scientists.

Small class sizes enable rapid progress and science is one of the most popular courses we run. Whether students need help with a particular topic they are covering in GCSE double award or single award science, or whether they are preparing for advanced level qualifications, their needs are catered for at Summit Saturday School.

Pupils in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 science classes, frequently achieve level 5 and above in SATs tests, whilst those studying for GCSE and A level, obtain grades A-C.

Science Department

Science is taught by three scientists who between them have more than twenty years teaching experience and all of whom have experience marking examination papers. Classes are offered at Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, GCSE, AS and A2.

The Science Department at Summit Saturday School has enjoyed a high degree of success with students achieving A* - C grades in GCSE, A Grade in AS and A2 and levels 5 and above in SATs.

The teachers bring enthusiasm and fun to learning, and use a range of creative teaching strategies including presentations, discussions and experiments. As one of the core subjects in the National Curriculum, Science is a popular choice with pupils.

Key Stage 2 Science

The Science Department offers a comprehensive course at Key Stage 2.

The scheme of work for Key Stage 2 incorporates the National Curriculum areas of Life processes and Living things, Materials and their properties and Physical processes.

The focus in this class is to make students aware of the relevance of science in their day to day lives and cultivate an interest and basic understanding that becomes very useful in later classes. Where possible ideas are explained using practical demonstrations. Summit pupils regularly attain levels 5 and above in SATs examinations.

Key Stage 3 Science

The Scheme of work for Key Stage 3 incorporates the National Curriculum areas of:
  • Life processes and Living things
  • Materials and their properties
  • Physical processes

Teachers deliver material that goes beyond the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum, not only working at increasing students’ levels and confidence in science but introducing some of the concepts that will be covered at GCSE. Students will not only learn the material necessary to achieve Level 5 or greater but will also develop examination techniques. Key Stage 3 science is an examination course, and is introduced in a way that is not only fun for the students but is relevant to their every day lives.

GCSE/Key Stage 4 Science

The three courses available under the National Curriculum; Double Award Science, Single Award Science and Triple Award Science are all catered for at Summit. The content of the course features elements of the separate disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They are taught in a stimulating and motivating manner, challenging pupils to embrace the concepts and apply them to the real world.

The new QCA programme on science teaching for GCSE qualifications has been incorporated into the current scheme of work.

Students benefit from a course that is designed to cover the main topics for OCR, AQA and Edexcel exam boards. At this stage whether the student is studying Biology, Physics or Chemistry, the emphasis is on examination techniques, key facts and study skills. Therefore whether a student is taking single, double, or triple award, the Science Department at Summit Saturday School works to ensure that every student is working at, or above his/her predicted grade.

During the Spring Term, past paper mock examinations are scheduled into the curriculum allowing students valuable exam practice.

Teachers are committed to improving students’ grades and also encourage them to develop a love of Science and become life long learners.

AS/A2 Level Science

Lessons are also offered at AS/A2 level.

Students are taught by specialist teachers either in small groups or on a one to one basis for AS and A2 examinations in Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Pupils examination results have been in the A-C range.

Testimonials

"Summit Saturday School has been the foundation of my learning from primary school all the way to my college education. Summit has given me the confidence to believe in myself. I believe that I can succeed. In contrast other schools try to discourage that belief. I have been fortunate to receive a scholarship as a result of being at Summit Saturday School. Summit also made learning fun, which made it easier for me to understand certain aspects of my most challenging subjects. I have often been told that I have ability, potential - Summit made that a reality for me." Miles
